UN Security Council rejects Russia-backed condemnation of U.S. missile strikes in Syria

시리아 공습 놓고 '국제규범' 갈등... 러시아, 안보리 규탄 결의안 채택 실패
The United States says the missile strikes in Syria... carried out with Britain and France over the weekend... were successful... putting Damascus on notice that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable.
Syria and Russia have condemned the missile strikes, but a bid by Moscow on Saturday for a UN Security Council resolution to that effect... failed.
Oh Jung-hee has more.
The Pentagon says... the strikes in Syria, carried out with Britain and France, successfully hit all their targets... and will significantly impact Syria's ability to develop and use chemical weapons.
The U.S. defense department said Saturday... the firing of 105 missiles was meant to let the Syrian regime know clearly... that any future use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

Syria condemned the tripartite attack, calling it a brutal and uncivilized act that violates international law and principles.
Syria also rejected the U.S. claim that none of its missiles were "successfully engaged,"... saying it intercepted most of the missiles flying into Damascus and other areas through its air defense network.

Russia backed Syria, saying the missile strikes undermine peace and stability in the Middle East... and brought a vote in the UN Security Council on Saturday to condemn the act,... but that was rejected.
This was the fifth time the 15-member council has met on Syria... since a suspected deadly gas attack in Syria a week ago.
Russia said there was no evidence chemical weapons were used.

"This time in Douma, a Damascus suburb, Russian military experts did not find any trace of chlorine or any other toxic agents when they visited the site. Not a single local resident was able to confirm that a chemical attack had actually taken place."

The United States, France and Britain defended their military action... as in line with laws to prevent the killing of innocent people.

"With yesterday's military action, our message was crystal clear. The United States of America will not allow the Assad regime to continue to use chemical weapons. If the Syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again, the United States is 'locked and loaded.'"

After bitter exchanges in the Security Council, Russia's draft resolution condemning the strikes won only the support of China and Bolivia.
