Friday marks the fifth day since the beginning of the police operation in the so-called ZAD ('Zone a Defendre'; 'Zone to Defend'), a militant occupation 20 km (12 miles) northwest of Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

In the aftermath of the clashes, people could be seen cleaning the fields from tear gas and grenades canisters, burnt cars and the last flames of fire. The access to the roads that lead to the ZAD area are still blocked by the Gendarmerie.

The eco-activists from ZAD initially came together in 2008 to protest against a proposed airport in Nantes.
