BREAKING: Police kill hostage taker in French supermarket siege | Al Jazeera English

Police officers have shot dead a gunman holed up in a supermarket after taking hostages in the southern French town of Trebes.

Officials confirmed the death of the hostage taker on Twitter.

Earlier on Friday, the gunman killed two and wounded several others before taking hostages in a supermarket.

According to Eric Menassi, mayor of Trebes, all civilians managed to escape the super market. Only one hostage, a police officer, remained with the hostage taker when the police assault began.

French officials said the gunman claimed allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe seemed to be an "act of terrorism".

"All the information we have at the moment leads us to believe that this was an act of terrorism," he told reporters on Friday.
