Mexico: Defence Secretary speaks to victims after deadly helicopter crash

The Mexican Secretary of Defence General Salvador Cienfuegos was speaking to victims of Friday’s earthquake in Santiago Jamiltepec, in the south-western state of Oaxaca on Saturday, including relatives of 14 people who were killed in a helicopter crash.

A military helicopter had been assessing earthquake damage when it crashed on top of several vehicles in a field close to Santiago Jamiltepec.

Fourteen people were killed in the accident, including a six-month-old baby. It is thought they had left damaged buildings in case of aftershocks.

The helicopter had been carrying Mexico's interior minister and the governor of Oaxaca, both of whom escaped without injury.

"We have a moral commitment of responsibility to the relatives and we won't put it to one side," General Cienfuegos told reporters.

Friday's 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck close to Pinotepa de San Luis in Oaxaca, at about 17:30 local time (23:30 UTC).
