President Moon Jae-in held a meeting with his top aides with a focus on the upcoming Olympics.
The liberal leader called for the public's support on North Korea's participation in the quadrennial event.
Hwang Hojun shares with us his remarks.
President Moon called North Korea's participation in the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games a valuable and dramatic opportunity for inter-Korean dialogue... to establish peace in the region, amid the high tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang.
The liberal leader insisted that North Korea's participation in the Games, as well as the South-North dialogue to that end, are significant... because they will play a key role in the successful hosting of the Olympics and the Paralympics and will benefit South Korea's economy.
But he cautioned that time is of the essence.

"No one should be optimistic about how long this atmosphere for dialogue will last."

President Moon emphasized the need to seize the opportunity because of the likelihood that relations could again deteriorate, and because no one knows how hard it could be to create another chance for talks after the Olympics come to a close.

(KOREAN)
"We need wisdom and real effort to extend this miraculously earned chance for dialogue even after the end of the PyeongChang Games."
( )

He said the current dialogue between the two Koreas needs to lead to talks between Pyongyang and Washington, too, saying only then can the North Korea nuclear issue be resolved, and peace and prosperity continue on the Korean Peninsula.

The President's remarks came amid growing public criticism over the agreement between the South and North to form a unified women's Olympic hockey team.
Comparing the situation a candle flickering in the wind, President Moon called for the public, politicians, and the media to lend their support at least for the successful hosting of the Olympics.

(STANDUP)
To keep the momentum going, President Moon asked North Korea to make an effort as well.
He noted there may be difficulties in the process after a long hiatus in talks between the two sides, but said it is necessary for the South and the North to work out the kinks.
