Denmark: Self-submarine builder Peter Madsen charged with murder

Danish submariner Peter Madsen was charged with killing of a Swedish journalist Kim Wall on Tuesday during a trip on his private submarine near Copenhagen.

Prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen said the case is "very unusual and extremely disturbing" refusing to reveal further details of the investigation.

The crowdfunded submarine sank near Copenhagen's coast on 10 August 2017. At the time, Madsen claimed that Wall, who had joined him on board of the vessel as part of research for news story about him, had been safely evacuated to shore before the sinking. He later changed his version several times claiming Wall died during the accident.

SOT, Jakob Buch-Jepsen, prosecutor (Danish): "The prosecution authority in Copenhagen has today, Tuesday January 16, 2018, presented charges against Peter Madsen for preparing and premeditating the murder of the female reporter, Kim Wall."

SOT, Jakob Buch-Jepsen, prosecutor (Danish): "According to the prosecution, we are talking about a very unusual and extremely disturbing case and because of Kim Wall's next of kin and because the case should not be conducted before the court has been settled, and not (appear) in the media, the prosecution doesn't wish to go into details regarding the charges other than what comes out now."
