30 refugees killed as boat capsizes off Yemen

At least 30 African refugees have drowned off the coast of Yemen after their overcrowded boat capsized, the United Nations (UN) has reported. Some 152 Somalis and Ethiopians were on board the overcrowded boat, which departed from Aden for Djibouti on January 23. The UN says smugglers may have been trying to extort more money from the passengers, with survivors reporting gunfire before the boat capsized. The war in Yemen has forced many refugees who had fled Somalia to attempt the dangerous crossing back home.
